What Shoes do you wear socks with?

Oct 25

"What shoes do you wear socks with?" is a question that keeps popping up. A lot of men can't see why wearing socks with dress shoes isn't a good idea, and the women seem to either not care or be completely against it. This article aims to explain why exactly this is such a debatable topic.

Dress shoes are meant to be worn barefoot or with stockings/tights only.

Socks and shoes, just like t-shirts and jeans, don't mix. Even if loafers aren't exactly the same as sneakers, they're still work casual shoes, which means that even though you might not see it written on their soles, they're still built with the same "comfort" in mind. Stockings or tights are made out of a material that literally sticks to your skin, which makes them the perfect choice for shoes meant to be comfortable.

Even though socks generally aren't made of the same materials as stockings (unless you go high-end), their main goal is to keep your feet warm. This means that they're made out of materials that offer insulation (cotton mostly) and aren't really built to stick to your skin like stockings do. Because of this, wearing socks with dress shoes will make them far less comfortable than when you wear them barefoot or with stockings.

Dress shoes are meant to be elegant and stylish, not comfortable.

This is actually the number one reason why wearing socks isn't a good idea with dress shoes. Even though you might think that it's more comfortable (and in some cases it might even be) dressing like this will make you look like an uncivilized person.

Even though dressing comfortably is a trend that's been around for a while now, going sockless isn't the same as going barefoot. That doesn't mean that you have to choose between one or the other, but it does mean that there are better alternatives than socks with dress shoes, such as stockings or tights.
